S.A.L. Awards

Kids need positive role models to look upto and emulate. Unfortunately, many kids today report that they do not have role models. Other times, their choice of a role model is questionable, at best.

The SAL ROLE MODEL AWARDS provide theyouth of San Mateo County with role models that exemplify character traits that we ask them to exhibit. The San Mateo County SAL Role Model Award Winners will be featured in the curriculum with the SAL participants. It is wonderful for them to learn about role models in their community.

What do all of these people – and thousands of others living in San Mateo County and across the United States – have in common? They are all alumni of Police Athletic/Activities Leagues (P.A.L.) or Sheriff's Activities Leagues (S.A.L.).

P.A.L./S.A.L. alumni have achieved great success in entertainment, business, politics and sports, due in large part to their participation in these programs and their pursuit of education and/or employment opportunities. Many are raising families and doing their part as volunteers in their communities. Below you will find a partial list:

Below you will find the stories of a few San Mateo County youth who participated in S.A.L. programs over the years:

Armando Garcia played soccer with the S.A.L. Academicos Program for many years. He is currently playing for Notre Dame de Namur and received this recognition on the Notre Dame de Namur website for his first season: "Garcia (Redwood City, CA/Sequoia HS) turned in one of the finest debut seasons in school history. The freshman forward led the team in goals with 9, and points with 21, while finishing ranked third in the league in total points, points per game (1.31), total goals and goals per game (0.56). He is the first Argonaut to earn Freshman of the Year honors and was also named Second Team All-Conference."

Jorge Valdovinos and Gerardo Madrigal grew up playing in the S.A.L. Academicos Program. Last year they attended try outs and made the San Jose Earthquakes U18 roster. Both participated in the S.A.L. High School Helper Program and served as role models to our current players. Gerardo's younger brother is currently on the U10 team.

Alex Valdovinos is another alumni of the S.A.L. Academicos Program. He is currently attending California State University Stanislaus and playing goalie for U18 Santa Clara Sporting, a nationally ranked team.
