Community Policing Unit

The Sheriff's Activities League (S.A.L.) works under the Community Policing Unit under the Patrol Bureau of the Operations Division of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Community Policing Unit is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques in order to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Below is a partial list of programs, events, and classes offered or assisted by this Unit. For questions or more information, please contact Sergeant Michael Otte at (650) 363-4537.

Two of the programs S.A.L. works with closely are CARON and S.T.A.R. Camp, which are described briefly below:

CARON (Community Alliance to Revitalize Our Neighborhood) is an initiative to create strong and healthy immigrant families that are integrated into their community. CARON program highlights, include:

  • Youth Mentorship Program
  • Annual Educational Fair
  • Outreach Workers
  • Violence Prevention Workshops
  • Sheriff's Deputies' Community Dialogues
  • Neighborhood Watch Programs – sharing of tools on how to start and operate these programs.
  • Spanish Speaking Citizens Academy

Camping, archery, swimming, horseback riding, nature hikes, crafts, stories and songs by the campfire – these are but a few of the activities that San Mateo County youth have been enjoying at S.T.A.R. Camp every summer for more than fifteen years. Throughout the year, San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputies work with elementary and middle school personnel to identify 120 youth, grades 5 – 8, to participate in the week-long S.T.A.R. Camp adventure. For many youth, camp counselors and Sheriffs deputies alike, this is a once in a lifetime experience as they build lasting bonds around fun and the great outdoors.
